About
The Mormon Story …is the human story.
The project
The Mormon Story is a long-form look at Mormonism in three parts that rarely sit together: the history, the truth claims, and the psychology of belief. Historians, understandably, tend to stop at the facts. This project asks what is likely true, why it is so hard to say so, and why any of it matters to the people who live inside the story — and to those who have stepped outside it.
John Dehlin
John Dehlin is a podcaster, researcher, and the founder of Mormon Stories, which since 2005 has recorded more than 2,200 long-form interviews with people inside and outside the Latter-day Saint tradition — believers, scholars, church leaders, and those who have left. He holds a Ph.D. in clinical and counseling psychology; his peer-reviewed research on religious faith crises, scrupulosity, and the LGBTQ Mormon experience has appeared in the Journal of Counseling Psychology and other journals. Before that he spent seven years at Microsoft and three at MIT, where he directed the international OpenCourseWare Consortium. He is founder and CEO of the Open Stories Foundation, a nonprofit supporting people in religious transition, and his work has been covered by The New York Times, NPR, and The Wall Street Journal. The Mormon Story is his attempt to say, after two decades of listening, what he thinks it all means.
